On June 14, a flash mob dedicated to World Open Knitting Day was held as part of the Burdafest festival in the Museon Park in Moscow.
Our site was very creatively designed by the company Yarnbombing, who calls her work "knitted graffiti" and specializes in knitted ornaments for trees, benches, sculptures and other elements of the urban landscape. It was impossible without emotion to pass by a pretty car in a bright knitted case with playful daisies on a green background. The trunks of the trees were dressed in colorful leggings, next to the benches stood an umbrella of unusual openwork knitting, and a huge clew of yarn and knitting needles decorated the clearing. Employees of the company also took care of the participants, preparing beautiful, soft and comfortable plaids with the symbols of the magazine Burdaso that no one has to sit on the grass. Most people came to Muzeon Park specifically for this event, learning about the day of knitting on the site BURDASTYLE.RU and in our groups on social networks. Some took part in the knitting marathon last year. But very many enthusiastically joined our friendly team, just passing by. After all, to participate in the competition it was enough only to be able to knit. Threads and knitting needles provided by our long-standing partner - the company "Spinning", in the assortment of which you can find high-quality yarn from around the world, as well as accessories for knitting, embroidery and needlework. And this variety is available not only to Muscovites, but to all residents of our country, because all goods can be ordered through the online store, and they will be delivered to anywhere in our vast country.
The contest conditions were very simple: dial 30 loops and knit with any pattern, and after 2 hours we compared whose "scarf" was the longest. To judge our competition, we invited company employees Crafts crafts. These craftswomen know how to knit on very thick knitting needles and even just on their hands, which they successfully demonstrated to an amazed audience. In addition, the company has prepared 3 special prizes for the most creative work.
Many came to our holiday with whole families, and everyone found something to their liking. For children, pencils and special tree sketches were prepared that could be painted, but many girls tried to keep up with their mothers and grandmothers and also took up knitting needles. Some men also knitted, and one young man learned right before everyone's eyes: his companion dialed loops, showed him basic techniques, and he instantly mastered this simple science. Some husbands just sat nearby, cheering on their wives, holding balls in their hands and unwinding yarn. Many needlewomen were dressed in hand-made products, so we got an impromptu fashion show.
At our holiday, a cheerful friendly atmosphere reigned, the host asked all the participants how long they had become addicted to this useful hobby, which models considered their highest achievement and what they like to knit more. Everyone joked a lot, exchanged experiences, attached themselves to memories.
More and more new participants joined us throughout the marathon. Although they understood that they would not be able to overtake those who started from the very beginning, they just wanted to sit in our circle and tie them too. It's so contagious!
Most of all I was struck by a very elderly man who, almost at the end of the marathon, suddenly came up to me, asked for a ball with knitting needles and sat down to knit.He said that after the war, when he was still a child, he learned to knit from his mother and since then for more than 60 years he did not pick up knitting needles. And today he walked by, walking with a dog, and he suddenly wanted to remember his childhood.
So we had a very friendly and fun time. After the final whistle, the results were summed up. Incentive prizes from the company "Spinner" received all the men who knew how to knit, because it is such a rarity in our time. Also prizes from "Spinning Mania" were received by 10 needlewomen, who had the longest knitted works. Three prizes were awarded by the craftsmen of Crafts Lab to those participants whose products seemed to them the most creative. But no one was left without gifts. In addition to prizes from our sponsors, all participants received special issues of the magazine Burda knitting Verena andCreazion. All connected items were combined into one long scarf and, making a memorable photo of all the participants, they decorated a tree in the Yarnbombing style with this scarf.
The holiday was a success, the participants were in no hurry to disperse, exchanging impressions and regretting that the day of knitting happens only once a year.
