From the history of macramé

The essence of macramé technique is nodular weaving from a cord or thick threads: knots knotted in different ways make up various patterns. Therefore, we can assume that the history of macrame began when people learned to tie knots - more likely thousands than hundreds of years ago.

The sources of macrame include nodular writing, the science of weaving fishing nets and knitting marine knots. To use weaving with knots as a way to create accessories, jewelry, decor for clothes began around the XIV century. Interest in technology either increased or decreased, but gradually both the macrame products themselves and this type of needlework as a way of spending time became more and more popular. The 18th century in Western Europe is called the Golden Age of Macrame. Then, using this technique, they began to create not only clothing decor, but also interior items, for example, tablecloths, bedspreads, lampshades, hammocks. The name "macrame" itself was attached to this type of needlework around the 19th century. There are versions of the Arabic and Turkish origin of the word, it denotes different types of work and products related to weaving and fringe.

Technique came to our country later, at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries, through the Baltic states. Macrame experienced a special flourishing in the 1970–80s. Soviet needlewomen did a variety of things in this technique - from collars, woven belts, eyeglasses, flowerpots to large-scale panels, rugs and bedspreads. Brochures and books were published, master classes were published in magazines, and weaving classes were organized in schools. By the end of the 90s and the beginning of the 2000s, however, macram, in our country and in the world, was forgotten a little. Until recently, only enthusiasts were engaged in it. But the ups and downs of popularity of macrame experienced more than once, and again it happened the same way - not even two decades had passed, and they remembered it again.

Today, macrame is again in the needlework top. This time, the technique returned primarily as a way to create home decor, primarily decorative panels. Also, using the macrame technique, flowerpots, bedspreads, lampshades, curtains for windows or doorways, hammocks and seats for chairs, covers for decorative pillows, screens, rugs and so on are still made.

The most popular macrame products today are still panels. And if earlier, in the same 80s, panels were made, as a rule, symmetrical, of the correct pattern, then everything is possible in modern macram. Classical symmetry and deliberate irregularity, the use of traditional wooden beads and unexpected elements like thick pieces of rope or metal parts, weaving from cords of the same color and multi-colored, including threads, fabrics in the weaving, creating works similar to paintings and art objects - a new resurrected macrame constantly changing and updating.

* For loft, minimalism, scandi styles, it is better not to use more than one or two in the same room, at most - three traditional things in this technique. If things are relevant, original and able to support a modern interior, then this restriction may be unnecessary.

* Another piece of advice for laconic interiors: in such things, not small macrame objects look good, but large-scale ones, for example, curtains on windows, a carpet, a bedspread, an unusual large panel. In these cases, it is better to dwell on 1-2 large objects.

* Small things in the traditional technique (flowerpots, small panels, pillows, especially a little together, and especially with rich fringe) give the interior a touch of romance and are well suited, for example, for the room of a suitably configured girl or lady.

* In this case, macrame things are quite capable of looking strictly and even brutally. To achieve this effect, it is better to use the material of the same color, nodes of the same type, geometric simple patterns / patterns and large and / or simple shapes.
