The safari style appeared in the 20s thanks to the fashionable passion of the time: hunting wild animals in Africa. Convenient and practical, this style has become firmly in fashion and remains relevant to this day.

A bit of history

Appearing in the 20s of the XX century, the safari style borrowed many of the characteristic features of the tropical form of the English soldiers. Shoulder straps, patch pockets, cuffs, wide belts still adorn safari models.

The word "safari" appeared in English at the same time, in the 1920s, and was borrowed from the Swahili language. Translated, it means "travel." In the first half of the 20th century, trips to Africa were more likely to be hunted, but in the second half, there was a fashion for traveling to Africa, and there was such entertainment as a safari, in the form in which it is known today - peaceful excursions into the wild, during which tourists simply take pictures of animals.

Key features of safari style

The climate influenced the appearance of safari-style clothes to a large extent: the constant heat required that things be sewn only from natural materials (cotton, linen, genuine leather) and have a free cut.

In the old days, due to the fact that many features were borrowed from the military, this style was considered not feminine enough. However, today things have finally lost their original masculine character. You will easily find dresses, blouses or jackets in safari style with quite feminine silhouettes and softened lines.

The safari style is not only very convenient and functional, it does not oblige to anything at all and, moreover, allows slight negligence. Wrapped sleeves or slightly jammed fabric are perfectly acceptable in this style.

The characteristic features of the safari style are:

  • loose functional fit
  • natural, breathable fabrics
  • a large number of pockets, flaps, zippers and buttons
  • military-style elements: epaulets, wide belt, cuffs, etc.
  • characteristic colors of the tropical protective uniform
  • slight negligence - creased sleeves, slightly wrinkled fabric, etc.

How to create a fashionable safari look?

The modern safari style offers a very large selection of clothing. Moreover, if earlier this style was considered rather summer, today it is quite suitable for other seasons.

Choose color

Safari clothes can be traditional colors for this style: khaki, sand, olive, yellow, beige or brown. And maybe even brighter colors or even in black and white - many designers quite allow such a color scheme.

Choose a model

Shirts and jackets in safari style are usually voluminous, with a large number of details: pockets, zippers, zippers or stitches. Often models can be transformed - with a flick of the wrist, trousers turn into shorts, a jacket into a vest, and a long cloak into a short one.

Dress shirt, tunics and pullovers made of natural materials are also great for creating an image in a safari style. Trousers are either narrowed or straight with patch pockets or lapels. Accessories and shoes will help to complement the look: a wide belt, a wide-brimmed hat, ethnic beads and bracelets, sandals, moccasins or lace-up boots.
