Drawing on jeans and other denim things seems to be a daunting task for those with a brush and paint on “you”! But a spectacular result is worth the effort.

Not all of us are lucky to be born with outstanding artistic skills, but there is good news - they can always be developed, there would be a desire! And a desire, as a rule, sooner or later, appears among many, especially when you admire the incredible talented works of masters decorating jeans (and not only) things with bright and expressive illustrations!

Denim jackets are especially popular as canvas, because there is enough space on the back to draw the whole picture.

Jeans are popular a little less, because the cut somewhat limits the possibilities, but at the same time painted pockets are very common - literally small paintings. By the way, paintings are often in the literal sense of the word: reproductions of famous paintings, from Van Gogh to Dali, are in great demand.

You might have thoughtthat you definitely can’t afford to depict a reproduction of the works of great masters of the past, but do not rush to abandon what you have planned - drawing on clothes does not imply that art critics will evaluate your work. Much more important in the end will be expression, colorfulness and expressiveness, rather than photographic accuracy.

Below you will find a master class with which you can try your hand as a clothing designer!

Idea: painting fabric with a contour of glue

You will need:

  • Jeans with back pockets (even if they are brand new, wash them beforehand)
  • Masking tape
  • Acrylic paints (including white)
  • Brushes of various sizes
  • Thin pen or marker
  • Plastic plate or palette for artists (for mixing paints)

Step 1

Use masking tape to protect your jeans from getting paint on those areas where it should not be, thus preparing a pocket for further work.

Step 2

Cover the pocket with 1-2 layers of white acrylic paint, so that the color of the jeans does not shine through the paint. This is necessary so that subsequent colors fall on a clean white background and look brighter without mixing with the shade of jeans.

Step 3

Wait for the white paint to dry completely and paint over the background as shown in the photo. Prepare a thin pen with suitable ink (the color does not matter, the main thing is that the ink dries well and does not smear later).

Further it is necessary to draw an approximate sketch, in this case, Van Gogh's “Sunflowers”.In the photo on the right you can see the same sketch, but on a white background - this option is also quite possible, but in this case you will need to colorize the background after you draw a vase with sunflowers.

Step 4

Prepare a palette (an ordinary disposable plate may also play its role) and squeeze a small amount of all the colors onto it. Feel free to mix paints to get the right shades!

If you drew a sketch on an already painted background, it is recommended to whiten the flowers again so that the yellow one looks cleaner and brighter and does not mix with the turquoise background.

Step 5

When the drawing is ready, leave it to dry.

After the paint has dried, remove the masking tape.

How to fix acrylic paint to fabric?

The most reliable way to protect your drawing is to fix the acrylic paint with a hot iron. Iron strictly FROM WRONG, for 5–7 minutes, at high temperature without steam.

After heat treatment, you can safely wash your jeans by hand, without fear that the pattern will suffer. Machine wash is also acceptable, but it is better to avoid aggressive effects, so the pattern will not fade and will not be damaged much longer.
